It is expected that by the end of 2017 more vehicle models manufactured by more automakers have HFO-1234yf for air conditioning. It can be for direct substitution of R-134a (with only little efficiency loss when used in R134a systems). That is its strength. But like R32 , R-600a, and R290, the gas is flammable (mild flammability). In some countries there are different regulations governing storage and recycling of the gas, installation and maintenance of air conditioning with the gas.

The new refrigerant HFO-1234yf behaves like R-134a. However, its GWP (global warming potential ) is only 4, as compared with 1430 of R-134a. The refrigerant R744 (CO2) was assigned a GWP value of 1 to be the reference gas.

In Taiwan there is a strict regulation, CNS60335-2-40, being enforced in August 2015.
